Recent research found a misaligned atlas vertebra can cause high blood pressure. The research was on 50 volunteers by a chiropractor who specialized in adjusting this one vertebra (NUCCA). See WebMD and Seattle reporter articles below. If you can't get to sites on these links, search "Chiropractic Cuts Blood Pressure" and "Lower blood pressure from neck adjustment?" There's also an article in the Harvard Heart Letter which was in their June issue. With a little trouble, you can get it on their website. I was not able to attach it for some reason.

NUCCA practitioners are few and far between - only one in my state, many miles away. As an alternative, I went to an Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractor (both are upper cervical specialties) who also adjusts the Atlas vertebra but with an instrument rather than his hands. Mine was misaligned and I had one adjustment. It appears to have lowered my blood pressure. It was totally painless! It's only been a week but the Atlas is still holding and I'll continue to see the Atlas practitioner for as long as I have these results. My health plan covers a part of chiropractic care.

I use Resperate every day and have had good results with it as well. The combination Resperate and Atlas adjustment may be the right combination if your Atlas vertebra is misaligned and you have high blood pressure. It's one more positive thing you can do for your heart.

I have had high B.P. since my teenage years and been on meds ever since. I'm now 62 - had one "small" stroke. Averaged B.P. in 130's and 140's - unless at M.D. when it was much much higher. This morning my B.P. was 120/68 (on meds).

Do the research yourself, as I did. Don't be convinced by what I say. I tell my experience only for what it may be worth. It's not an ad for chiropractic - it's simply a way to inform you that it's out there and it may work for you.

What an interesting discovery .... and could be a wonderful improvement....

I would suggest that we do followup studies of patients that have had whiplash compared to similar population that has not and see if they have higher in general blood pressure.

The next logical question is why and how does back and neck problems cause higher BP?

Several of my friends and myself have noticed that working on the computer tends to push up our BP ... with it climbing while continue to work on the machine and dropping as you slack of usage.
I've wondered if it couldn't have something to do with holding the neck tight or still?
Perhaps patients with misassigned neck minimize or hold neck rigid -- creating a similar problem.

A good atlas adjustment can do far more than lower your blood pressure, and this is an understatement. A chiropractor should never twist the neck to untwist the atlas. Or pop the disks in any way. when the atlas has been twisted tilted and off center of the foramen magnum enough to shift your leg length to a シ or more inches causing the spine to contort to put pressure on the disk and then on the nerve. the nerves control and maintain countless functions reducing or interrupting the flow of these impulses will cause mayhem in multiple places in your body, and since many nerves don稚 tell you with pain too many people continue in this condition taking pharmaceuticals to hide the symptoms. People don稚 do that with there cars, they take it to a mechanic. When you look for a chiropractor he must be upper cervical specific, use x rays the ones my chiropractor who is a second generation palmer .he lives in Healdsburg California movement. And works in an unassuming old hospital but wow is he good. He uses the light toggle. Recoil on adults; it is a quick precise movement. Never judge a book by is cover. he takes - lateral- nasium,- a-p open mouth,- base posterior .or vertex x rays.
My chiropractor also draws exacting lines on x rays to determine in degrees how far the atlas is from where it should be, so when he does the adjustment he knows exactly hw much force and movement with his hand .he also uses an infrared scanner .It measures heat 1/100 of a degree .He can closely track your progress with this and other measuring tools, this is what he calls his instrumentation. He uses Instrumentation to measures before an adjustment and after to confirm positive results from adjustment. He only gives adjustments when absolutely necessary .Some times he will have you lie down for about an half hour and check you again to see if any changes are happening to the positive. The chiropractor must give you instructions what to do short term and long term. Like first 24 hours don稚 wash your hair .for the next three days don稚 lift more than 25 pounds. Sleep on your back. Do a lot of walking and build you exercising routine slowly in intensity over time. The longer the atlas stays in place the fewer adjustments you will need and more time between office visits.
The nucca and the Ica are good choices also. Your problems can start with the trauma of birth, therefore every one from infants on up can benefit from this kind of care.

Every man woman and child should be checked .any one who is mentally disabled in any capacity should be checked, .and to be sure that there is someone to make sure they keep their appointments.

I'am also new to this forum. I would like to find a Atlas or NUCAA Orthogonal Chiropratic around Nashville Tn I have jercked my neck real hard about 4 different times falling asleep in the chair. Also I was rear ended in a auto accident and it jercked my neck had to wear a neck brace for awhile. My blood pressure has gone up and I'am suspecting this may be the cause. I know there is one in Memphis and also in Knoxville but that would be to far to go especially if I have to go back several times. If there is anyone who might know the answer or direct me how to find out I would so much appreciate it. Thanks mc303
