I've been reading quite a bit about the effect of dark chocolate on bp in the media lately. I'm willing to give anything a try, even though I'm probably the only woman in America who doesn't like chocolate. The article I read said to eat 10g daily but doesn't say how long before results are seen. Does anyone know anything about this? TIA

I haven't heard about dark chocolate, but I have had elevated bp since my auto accident and here is what has helped me keep from taking bp medication:

1) no salt (or as little as possible)
2) walking my dog
3) better diet
4) taking AmealS that I bought over the counter, I saw it in Prevention magazine, and it is working for me!!! www.AmealS.com
5) drinking more water.

Thank you for your reply. What is AmealS? And where can I get it. I agree with drinking water, it has definitely helped me, and as for salt...I can have a handful of chips and my bp rises dramatically. I'm extremely salt sensitive. I really do need to loose some weight, but everyone in my family has hbp, it seems to happen in our late 30's. Doesn't matter whether we're overweight or not. Its really weird. I read about the dark chocolate in Woman's World magazine and also in some magazine in my dentists office. It quoted a 10 year study and sounds quite promising. Good luck with your battle against hbp and once again thank you for replying.

The DASH diet is your best defense, especially if you go heavy on the fiber from whole foods. Many light meals, especially when regularly followed by moderate exercise, is much better than the usual big meal in the evening. Chocolate is usually accompanied by lots of saturated fat and sugar, so it could easily be worse for you than none at all. If you want to try it, go for high-quality extra - dark, such as Equal Exchange Dark, which is garateed to be at least 55% cocoa. You can also enjoy unsweetened cocoa dishes, such as chicken mole.
